Sonoma County Favorites

We love living in Sonoma County.  The air, the sun, the food, the wine - it all makes for an ideal place to live.  And we’re very fortunate to have so many excellent restaurants that focus on serving up the best that this land has to offer.  A few of our favorite spots include Ravenous in Healdsburg, SCOPA in Healdsburg, Mosaic in Forestville, ZAZU in Santa Rosa and K&L Bistro in Sebastopol.  The chefs at each of these restaurants have a bounty of beautiful fruits, vegetables, seafood and meats to work with, and they also have a plethora of wines to choose from.  We are happy that each of these restaurants feature our Sauvignon Blanc wines.  Sante!

A Difference in Tradition

Every growing season imparts a unique experience on the journey from bud break to harvest. Consider our Tradition Sauvignon Blanc for 2008 and 2009, each spaced apart by a single year, and yet, each yield an experience uniquely their own.

For 2009, we increased the irrigation in Kick Ranch while maintaining the same pruning as in 2008. However, 2009 provided a greater focus on slightly increasing canopy to provide further protection for the fruit. 2009’s growing season was more mild compared to 2008—this lack of heat translates into slightly lower sugars, meaning slightly lower alcohol. We have also sourced fruit from two new sites: Fallen Leaf and Rooster Vineyard, which will be represented in the Sauvignon Blanc blends for 2009. We chose these sites for their volcanic clay soils, which provide excellent rain run off, leading to smaller, intensely flavored grapes.

But this comparison isn’t a matter of superiority between each of the years, rather it’s about a snapshot we seek to savor for what it represents. That’s ultimately the magic of wine that brings all of us back to a particular vineyard year after year. We like to follow that story, and, by tasting the wines with each year, we become a part of that story the land tells. As we anticipate the spring of 2010, we look forward to all the twists and turns in the story our wines will tell.

Bud-Break Season

The days are longer and warmer, so our sleepy vineyards are waking up.  Little bits of green growth are appearing on the brown vines.  We call that new growth bud-break.  It’s a very exciting time of year for us becuase it means that the farming season is just starting.  But it’s also stressful becuase we are constantly watching the temperatures in the vineyards, just hoping that it doesn’t freeze!

2008 CAPTÛRE WINES Sauvignon Blanc Tradition Kick Ranch/Windrem Ranch (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley)3/23/2010BigRed7095

WOW! This wine explodes out of the glass. Your imagination takes you to sitting brook-side in a wildflower meadow in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park drinking lemonade after a long hike. … the gravel, the bracing clear, clean acidity, the floral nose, the citrus taste. Then add the huge mouth feel and super-long finish. Drank this with chicken breast off the grille and it overwhelmed the food. Want a wine to go with your Oysters Rockefeller, Steamed shrimp with Old Bay spice, and blackened Mahi Mahi? This is it! WAKE ME … I must be dreaming! (48 views)

Nose of citrus, ripe fruit. Pale yellow, but very ripe, with great bracing acidity. What a wonderful balance! Palate is ripe, like meyer lemons, mixed with an amazing peppery finish. Totally delicious! (77 views)

Don’t let the pale color fool you. Citrus, honeysuckle, and minerals on the nose. Tart sugar, lemons, more minerals esp. on the finish. WOW. What a steal. French in style. (350 views)

Snow on the mountain!

A few times each decade our extreme elevation vineyard gets a dusting of snow.  Today, March 31, 2010, was one of those dates!  Fortunately, only one of our blocks of vineyards has any growth - known as bud break.  So, it’s really more of a novelty for us, and something fun to see.  There wasn’t even enough snow to scrape up a snowball, but it still made us smile.
